Getting to Know Us

About Me

I have been container gardening since becoming a healthcare worker about 17 years, ago. I descend from southern rural farmers. While many generations moved to urban and suburban areas, they carried that desire to “work the dirt” with them. Gardening was a great stress reliever. It enhanced the beauty of our outdoor space, including porch and/or deck areas. Tending my garden gave me a sense of fulfillment. My plants supported the ecosystem while providing delicious, fresh and healthy treats for my family.

My container garden began with two flower planters on the porch. It later became strategically placed and selected planters on my porch and deck. I began gardening for food harvest, fragrance, pollinator attraction, pest control, and for visual effect (ornamental purposes).

Numerous family members, friends and neighbors have asked how I erected and maintained these container gardens. They often expressed the desire to follow suit but that they lacked a “green thumb” or adequate space. My usual retort was that neither of these were required.

Then the coronavirus pandemic began in early 2020. It became increasingly clear, just how important it was to get outdoors, manage stress, and to have a safe outlet or retreat. What also became more obvious, is the importance of finding new ways to spend time with your family, and access to fresh and healthy fruits and vegetables.

We all gained a satisfaction and calm from helping and watching our garden grow. As the summer of 2020 progressed, it was no longer just me. I would also find both my daughter and husband enjoying this outdoor space. It became a space for reading, sketching, dining, enjoying a cold beverage, or working from home.

Our Vision

I enjoy container gardening and have been more successful than not with my garden endeavors. I also know that this way of gardening is achievable regardless of your budget and whether you live in an urban or suburban area. All you need is access to some sunlit outdoor space.

In 2021, after compiling photos, video and logging what I learned along the way, I accepted the challenge of sharing my experience. This was so that others could enjoy the rewards of container gardening, including mental and physical health benefits, and food security. I hope to continue to create a forum for learning and sharing.
